Sweet little Gypsy was found wandering in the desert with another dog. They were taken into rescue, cleaned up, fattened up & vetted. Despite her emaciated state & being pretty sickly, Gypsy healed up nicely and is a wonderful family pet now. She is ~4-5months old and is doing wonderfully with learning basic commands & with housebreaking – she is still a young pup, so two steps forward & one step back! She gets along well with the other dogs & cats in her foster home. She loves children! She really loves everyone! She’ll get another vaccine booster next week but has been spayed. She will be microchipped. Not good on a leash quite yet. When a dog is brought to a shelter after having a home it can be pretty hard — but one shelter worker is trying to fix that for one very special dog. Lana, a 4-year-old bullmastiff mix, was found as a stray when she was just a puppy. The person who found Lana couldn't keep her, and so they brought her to the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, where she was soon adopted. Unfortunately, after three years of living happily in her new home, Lana was returned to the shelter in April. Now, four months later, Lana is still searching for her forever home. She's having a hard time being back in the shelter after having a home for so long — and so one staff member decided to do something about it. In order to bring awareness to Lana's cause and help her get adopted, Whitney Steele, director of volunteers and events at the shelter, has decided to stage a sit-in. She will be living with Lana in her kennel, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until Lana finally has a home once more. In order to really understand what Lana goes through every day, Whitney is living exactly as she does — meaning that when she sleeps in the kennel with Lana, she sleeps on a dog bed instead of a cot. "Whitney is learning a lot about what Lana goes through every day, and even though we have an amazing facility, it's not a comfortable, loving home," Michael Morefield, marketing and communications manager at the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, told The Dodo. "Even after one night, Whitney has really taken that to heart and misses home, and Lana has been doing this every day for over four months. That was a hard realization." Local businesses have been bringing by food for Whitney (and Lana) while she lives in the kennel, and she's even been holding meetings in there. "They have really bonded and are going through all those fun roommate situations: who ate the last slice of pizza, who stole the pillow, and what to watch on Netflix," Morefield said. The shelter is doing all this to show everyone that Lana is an amazing dog, who more than deserves a second chance at a happy ending. Lana loves going for hikes with the shelter volunteers, and also takes naps with the other workers in her kennel from time to time. She is smart, athletic and easygoing, and would make the perfect pet for any family. She just needs someone to give her a chance. "She is a strong, independent woman who is also really humble, so Whitney is helping show her off," Morefield said. "Everyone needs a hype man every once in awhile, and if Lana is too humble to tell people how great she is, we are going to do it for her!" Sweet Baby was surrendered to the rescue when she was a little too much puppy for the family who took her in. She is a shy, quiet tiny girl but warms up and LOVES to be cuddled. She’s doing well with the other small dogs in her foster home & is learning to use a doggy door but still needs to go out w/ her foster parents regularly – she is learning housebreaking. She is vaccinated, microchipped & spayed. She was originally a foster through HALO but their process for “returns” are that the dog has to go back to the county shelter and it was agreed by all parties that it would be best to keep her with our rescue in stead. These sweet babies were taken in by a local who had been feeding their very scared mama near Ultrastar. (with the kind help of the Ak Chin Animal Care & Control Officer.) Unfortunately Mama was very malnourished & dehydrated and once her babies were safe, she no longer had the will to live. She passed peacefully and now her pups (both males & females) are in the capable hands of foster mom (Tiffany Gunter) who is helping socialize them and getting them to/from vet for care. They will be fully vaccinated, microchipped & spayed/neutered prior to adoption. They are approx 5lbs each now and we anticipate they will be closer to mama’s size at 40-50 lbs. They are doing well with housebreaking! Domino is an AWESOME dog! He is neutered, good with children, housebroken and great on a leash although he pulls a little at first. He loves to take walks & play. He is a very good boy and understands basic commands – “sit” “stay” “easy.” He is a super smart guy who even figured out how to open up the sliding glass door when he needs to go out to potty! His is a typical goofy boxer! Unfortunately, Domino is a product of a divorce and is not needing a new furever home where he can be loved on & be as goofy as he wants to be with his new family! Fitz is looking for a furever home! He’s a good boy who is very smart and learns quickly. He is kennel trained and does very well on a leash for walks. He is playful and although hasn’t quite mastered the fetch part of the game, he sure does like to chase his toys! Fitz does have some professional canine training and he is fully vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. He does well with older children but not so well with toddlers. He would love to have brothers or sisters to play with. Not tested around cats. Sweet Cooper is with a family who loves him but due to some family circumstances he needs to find a new furever home. He is a very good boy who is housebroken and who is well socialized. Good with other dogs and loves to be pampered! Healthy, up to date on vaccines & can be microchipped by rescues for a small additional fee. Kennel he is used to will come with him to the new family. Dougie was a surrender to the rescue. He was at first 5lbs of snarling puppy until he got into his foster family with children and then he blossomed! He is quite the little snuggler and LOVES it when his foster family comes home to play with him. He is an adorable wiggly little guy who will top out around 6-7lbs. He is kennel trained and has had some basic obedience training. He loves to take walks and play play play.
