It's become the latest trend - with more and more dog owners turning to Cannabis to help treat everything from their animal's pain to anxiety. Littleton resident Leslie Padzick is one of them. For the past few years, her aging Schipperke, Luca -now 12- has suffered from anxiety. This spring, Luca's vet found a large tumor growing in his body. Padzick contemplated an expensive surgery but worried Luca wouldn't make it through such an invasive procedure at his age. “I really wanted to find another option to help him,” said Padzick. She hopped online and began researching alternatives to help with Luca’s discomfort. She found a growing trend inside of medical marijuana shops: pot marketed towards pets. They're In the form of Cannabidiol or CBD oil- which is derived from both Cannabis and Hemp, but don’t include THC, the ingredient that produces the high. “When I get woken up at midnight by Luca, and for two hours I just try and calm him down, it’s hard. I feel like I have a sick kid and I just want to help him,” said Padzick, “And why go through all of that when we have another option? Pot is in our news every day so obviously more and more research is going into it—so why not try it?” It’s a growing mindset among pet owners. “I wish a veterinarian could prescribe it for my dog, I wish I knew just how much to give him,” said Padzick. “It’s not like I’m giving my dog a joint, that’s not what I’m doing. It’s not a big party- it’s another medicinal option. And I want to know more.” Veterinarian Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald says there is still much research to be done on the impacts and side-effects of pot used on pets before he can get behind the idea. He’s not alone. The ASPCA and PETA have not endorsed Cannabis for animals due to a lack of research and veterinarians, like Fitzgerald cannot prescribe medical marijuana for animals. “Can this stuff hurt them? I don’t know. How much should you give? I don’t know. Does it work? I don’t know” said Dr. Fitzgerald, “If it works, I’ll be the first one to get behind it, but until more trials are done and we know, I am not willing to gamble with the health of our patients.” Meanwhile, Padzick is willing to try it out. She has heard several success stories on CBD oil use on dogs. “I have a friend who has been using CBD oil on her aging dog and she says it is working, he is sleeping better.” As for Luca, Padzick just wants to do whatever she can to help him feel better. “I feel like if it's not getting him high, there’s got to be other benefits, so let’s give it a try at least. At this point, don't have very many options.” Padzick’s goal now is to figure out how to get it. Some people who already have medical marijuana cards are able to buy pet-marketed products at medical marijuana shops. Some pet-marketed products are sold at recreational pot shops, but products there that contain CBD oil also have THC in them. According to the Colorado Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, pet owners are able to buy pet-products with CBD’s derived from Hemp online. There are also special boutique stores that sell Hemp products for pets as well. Memorial Day Special Video... When you were a kid, you'd probably go running when you heard the music from the ice cream truck coming near — and this sweet-toothed pit bull does exactly the same thing. When an ice cream truck pulled up near her house, she got VERY excited. She ran over to the truck, and when her mom came over with some money, she took her place in line, then sat down and waited. As soon as it was their turn, the pup sat right below the window, watched her mom hand over the money ... ... and finally saw what she'd been waiting for. As soon as the pit bull's mom handed over the ice cream, she ate the ENTIRE thing in just a few bites ... ... and almost instantly went looking for more. Hey, you can't blame a girl for trying! It may come as a surprise to learn that cats, like the rest of us, tend to favor one paw over the other — that is to say, their left or right. Who knew? But now that you're aware of that interesting bit of trivia, you're probably wondering how to find out if your beloved pet is a righty or a lefty. (You'll be glad you did if you ever run across a good deal on golf clubs for cats, or something.) Well, here to walk us through a simple experiment that will help reveal your kitty's dominant paw is Maru, one of the internet's most famous felines. All you'll need is a cup, a tasty morsel of food and a cat who's willing to join in. That last item, admittedly, might be the hardest to procure. By inviting your cat to fish the treat out of the cup, you can tell which paw is the dominant one by seeing which side he or she uses. Sure, anyone who's ever been on the receiving end of an angry cat's jab knows that they seem more than happy with using either paw in a pinch. But researcher Deborah Wells says that when it comes down to it, they really do seem to show a preference. "The more complex and challenging [the task], the more likely we're going to see true handedness," she told New Scientist. In an actual scientific experiment, similar to the one above, Wells and her colleague Sarah Millsopp at Queen's University Belfast found that handedness in the 42 cats they studied seemed to correspond with their sex. Male cats appeared to be more inclined to be lefties, and females, righties — though at least one male cat was ambidextrous. The reason why is still something of a mystery. Meet Matilda, the world's foremost alien cat. This two-year-old female tabby suffers from an ocular issue that means she resembles an otherworldly feline being. According to comments from Matilda's owner on the popular Reddit forum, her distinctive look started about a year ago when "the lenses in her eyes spontaneously detached, and since then her eyes have grown and she has lost most of her sight." After visiting a vets and eye specialists, her condition remains undiagnosed and something of a mystery. An eye enucleation might be the next step -- although tests have shown that Matilda's blood and ocular pressure are at normal levels. Her owner also says that she doesn't seem to be in pain. It could have been a tragedy, but an anonymous hero was there to save to day. Earlier this month, Lima, Peru, resident Lorena Castro captured the dramatic moment when a police officer halted several lanes of traffic to save a stray kitten from being hit by a city bus. Castro says she was on her way to Lima's city center when she spotted the helpless 1-month-old kitten on the highway. "I was about to get out of the car to pick her up when the motorcycle cop passed by," Castro told Peruvian newspaper El Comercio. "[He said,] 'Stay in the car. I'll take care of it.'" After bringing Castro the kitten, the officer reportedly declined any reward (preferring to remain anonymous) and went back to work. Other than having a few fleas, Castro says the kitten is in good health — all thanks to one police officer's compassion. It can be pretty exciting when we finally get to meet those we look up to, and one dog got to experience exactly that during a family trip to a Disneyland. Max, who was on an outing with the family to Disneyland, came face to face with his dog idol — Pluto. Everyone reacts differently when meeting their heroes, and this dog's reaction was pretty much perfect.
